Three Dora Nominations for the Belle of Winnipeg
(Toronto – June 11, 2010) On June 2nd the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts announced the nominees for the 2010 Dora Mavor Moore Awards. We are thrilled to announce that the ground breaking new play “The Belle of Winnipeg” received three nominations in the Independent Theatre Production Division.
Ginette Mohr received the nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role for her hilarious and touching portrayal of the title character Belle. Lorie Brown’s bold design in black, white and shades of grey captured the look of a classic silent film earning her the nod for Outstanding Original Costume Design. David Atkinson created the musical voice for the piece and wowed audiences with his virtuosity on the piano capturing the nomination for Outstanding Original Sound Design / Composition.
Created in the style of a classic silent film comedy, “The Belle of Winnipeg” is a dynamic mix of physical theatre, multi media and brilliant music. Co-created over a four year period by an ensemble of 14 actors and theatre professionals Belle was brought to the stage in November 2009 as an Equity Approved Co-op under the name Keystone Theatre.
The Dora Awards will be presented at a gala celebration at the St. Lawrence Centre on Monday, June 28th.
